Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 26, 2026 · Applies to the WebNotes browser extension

Short version: WebNotes is local-first. Your highlights, notes, tags, and settings stay on your device. We do not operate a WebNotes account system, and the extension does not send your reading data to our servers.

1. Who we are

This Privacy Policy describes how the WebNotes extension (“WebNotes”, “the Extension”, “we”) handles information when you install and use it in Chromium-based browsers (such as Chrome or Edge).

2. What WebNotes does

WebNotes lets you highlight text on webpages, add notes and tags, restore highlights when you revisit a page, manage items in a side panel / popup / dashboard, search locally, and export or import backups (JSON / Markdown).

3. Data we store (on your device only)

Depending on how you use WebNotes, the Extension may store the following locally in your browser (IndexedDB and/or extension storage):

  • Highlighted text snippets and related metadata (color, timestamps, favorite status)
  • Optional notes and tags you attach to highlights
  • Page title and page URL needed to restore and organize highlights
  • Preferences such as theme, language, default highlight color, and toolbar / badge settings
  • Optional locally saved license key status (if you activate a key)

WebNotes does not require you to create an account. We do not maintain a cloud sync service for your highlights.

4. Data we do not collect

  • We do not collect browsing history to our servers
  • We do not sell personal data or highlight content
  • We do not include third-party advertising SDKs or analytics trackers in the Extension for marketing profiling
  • We do not upload your highlights, notes, or page content to a WebNotes backend

5. Why permissions are requested

Browser permissions are used only to provide WebNotes features:

  • storage / unlimitedStorage — save highlights, notes, tags, and settings on your device
  • tabs / activeTab / scripting / host access — detect selection, apply or restore highlights on pages you visit, and open/locate items
  • contextMenus / sidePanel — right-click actions and side panel management UI
  • downloads — export JSON / Markdown backups to your computer when you choose to export

6. Exports, imports, and backups

If you export data, files are created on your device through the browser download flow you initiate. If you import a backup, that file is read locally by the Extension. We do not receive those files.

7. Uninstall feedback (optional)

Chrome may open an uninstall feedback URL after removal. WebNotes only uses an uninstall URL if one is configured. That page—if enabled—is separate from your highlight database and should be limited to voluntary feedback. Your local IndexedDB data is removed with the Extension according to browser behavior.

8. Children’s privacy

WebNotes is a general-purpose productivity tool and is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction).

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy when features or legal requirements change. The “Effective date” at the top will be revised when updates are published on this page.
